First Lego League/Robotics
Sponsor/Advisor: Ms. Brown and Ms. Kasson

Grade Level: 4-8
Purpose: First Lego League introduces science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to children through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided, global robotics program.

Spelling Bee

Grade Level: 3-8
Purpose: We will follow the Scripps Spelling Bee competition guidelines. A Spelling Bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words with varying degrees of difficulty. Contestants must memorize the spellings of words as written in dictionaries and recite them accordingly. Students are encouraged to try Scripps in the fall and UIL Spelling in the Spring.

Purpose: The University Interscholastic League, the main governing body for academic competition among public schools in the U.S. state of Texas sanctions district competitions in science for students up to 8th grade.

Purpose: Ready Writing, is a contest that builds upon student writing skills, and helps students refine their writing abilities by learning to write clearly and correctly a paper that is interesting and original.

UIL Storytelling

Meetings: Tuesdays
Grade Level: 2 - 3
Purpose: To tell a story, the students must develop skills in listening, thinking and speaking. This contest also allows for the development of creative expression. Students will practice Storytelling all year and compete in the UIL competition in the Spring.
UIL Music Memory

Purpose: The focus of the Music Memory contest is an in-depth study of fine pieces of music literature taken from a wide spectrum of music genres to expose students to great composers, their lives and their music
UIL Spelling

Purpose: The University Interscholastic League (UIL) Spelling and Vocabulary Contest aims to help students develop their vocabulary and learn to use words precisely and effectively.
UIL Dictionary Skills
Sponsor: Ms. Brown

Grade Level: Grades 5-8
Purpose: The University Interscholastic League (UIL) Dictionary Skills recognizes that thorough knowledge of the dictionary is a way to increase a student's ability to find the information that is needed for classwork as well as everyday living. Students will increase their speed and accuracy in locating word origins and histories, parts of speech, variant spellings, plurals, and the skill of alphabetizing. Students will compete in a competition.
3D Printing Makeable
Sponsor: Ms. Brown
Requirements: Does not conflict with tutorials if required for student. Students will create something using 3D printing technology that assists someone with a disability.
Meetings: TBD, some extended Friday and weekend meetings will be required
Grade Level: Grades 4-8
Purpose: Design and make a 3D printed product or prototype that improves the day-to-day life of someone with a disability or the elderly. Regional Science Fair
Sponsor: Ms. Brown
Requirements: Does not conflict with tutorials if required for student. Interest in Regional Science Fair should be expressed at the start of the year to ensure students meet high expectations. Projects must be selected and meet all qualifications.
